Crazy Out of Context
What happens when everything the dog expects about odor is suddenly wrong?
In Crazy Out of Context, Tony Gravley will explore how a dog’s built-in expectations influence the way they hunt, interpret odor, and ultimately make decisions during a search. Dogs are constantly using past experience to predict where odor should be—and most of the time, those expectations help them. But what happens when the hide simply doesn’t make sense?
Throughout this workshop, Tony will intentionally place odor out of context—in locations that challenge what the dog believes should be possible. These setups are designed to create a conflict between what the dog’s brain expects and what their nose is actually telling them.
The goal is simple:
Reinforce the dog to believe their nose over their brain.
Tony will use carefully designed search problems to expose those moments when expectation begins to override odor information. Teams will work through unusual hide placements, unexpected odor pictures, and situations where the dog may initially dismiss accurate information because it doesn’t fit their previous experience.
Handlers will learn to recognize when their dog is working through this conflict, when to stay out of the conversation, and how to allow the dog to solve the problem independently.
This workshop isn’t about making searches difficult just for the sake of being difficult. It’s about expanding the dog’s understanding of what is possible.
By taking odor Crazy Out of Context, we build dogs that are more willing to trust what their nose tells them—even when everything else tells them it can’t possibly be there.
