Hi, I'm Scott Wenzel
I've been obsessed with nosework for the past decade. I started K9 Scent Sport Center to create the kind of training environment I wished existed when I started in the sport one where beginners feel welcomed, advanced handlers are challenged, and every dog is celebrated for their unique abilities.
After 10 years of competing and 6 years of teaching, I've learned that great nosework isn't about controlling your dog, it's about partnership. My goal is to help you understand what your dog is telling you and teach them the game in a way that keeps them eager and confident.

My Approach to Training
Great nosework training isn't about controlling your dog, it's about partnership.
I believe in:
Handler Education
The way a dog signals detection is subtle and specific — most missed hides aren’t a nose problem, they’re a handler-reading problem. I spend as much time teaching you to recognize your dog’s actual detection behavior as I do training the dog to search.
Realistic Training
Trial conditions don’t lie — and neither does your dog’s nose. Every space carries background odor that makes a hide easier or harder to notice, the same way a whisper is easy to hear in a quiet room and impossible in a loud one. We build difficulty deliberately, layering distraction and odor complexity, until nothing at the start line feels new.
Reinforcement, Done Deliberately
A dog’s desire to keep searching comes from its reinforcement history, not raw willpower or “drive” alone. Every session is built to grow that history on purpose — pairing odor with reward consistently, rather than hoping repetition alone does the work.
Individual Progression
Two dogs can hit the same wall for completely different reasons — one from low odor value, another from an unclear reward picture. Training plans are built around what’s actually happening in front of me, not a fixed curriculum applied the same way to every team.

Real-World Experience

Nosework tests two systems at once — your dog’s search skill and your own ability to read and trust it under pressure. We train both, deliberately, rather than assuming one will carry the other.

Years spent building and evaluating searches means I understand exactly what a trial is actually testing — not just how to pass it, but why certain hide placements and distances are genuinely harder. That understanding shapes every session, so training targets the real skill being tested, not guesswork.
